ID Select Instructions

ID Select directions for 2, 4, 7, and 8 bay cases

step by step instructions

Each ID Selector comes with a 4 connector cable. Only two of the connectors are used depending on which type of device you are using. I will explain the function of each connector here:

  1. Connector one is the ground wire if you are using a CD-ROM or other device that uses the larger set of ID Selector pins.

  2. Connector two is the main ID Select header if you have a CD-ROM or other device that uses the larger set of ID Selector pins.

  3. Connector three is the ground for the smaller set of pins normally used on hard disk drives.

  4. Connector four is the main ID Select header for the smaller set of pins normally used on hard disk drives.

You will only be using 2 headers: 1 and 2 or 3 and 4

You always line up the ID0(Red) wire with ID0 on your device. The ground can be installed on any of the ID pins opposite the main header.

ID Select Headers Plugged In

In the above picture the proper ID Select placement is illustrated. The headers install the "long way" with the main header on top. If this configuration doesn't work, try putting the ground on top.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Identify the size of ID Selector header you need. Hard disk drives usually use the smaller size. CD-ROMs usually use the larger size. Remember, there are 4 headers for each device, but you will only use 2 of them on your device.
  2. Find the jumper block identified as "ID0" on your device. You may need to consult your owners manual or the manufacturers web page for this information. I have provided a picture above showing a typical IBM hard drive.
  3. Line up the red wire with ID0 on your device. Put the header on so that ID0 lines up with RED, ID1 lines up with BLUE, ID2 lines up with YELLOW.
  4. Put the ground on the pins that are parallel to the main header. See the above diagram for visual help.
  5. Repeat process for all devices in your case.
  6. Remember to make each ID different. Each SCSI device must have a unique ID.
  7. TIP: If you need to access the "wide byte" of the ID select, put a jumper on ID3 of the drive. Then the switch on the back of the case will add 8 to each ID. (ex. ID0 will act as ID8, ID1 will act as ID9, etc......)
